Why the Night Stalkers Hunt Fear

Among all the creatures whispered about in Chaku’s Adventure, none are spoken about with more unease than the Night Stalkers.

Not because they are the strongest creatures beneath the earth.

But because many believe they do not hunt flesh first.

They hunt fear.

Across the kingdoms, elders often warn children about panic long before teaching them how to fight. Some outsiders misunderstand this, believing these teachings are simply meant to create brave warriors.

But the older tribes understand something far more disturbing.

They believe fear changes the spirit itself.

In Samrah, there is an ancient belief that intense fear causes the light of Jambu within a person to become unstable. Elders describe it as a trembling within the spirit — as though panic weakens the invisible boundary separating the soul from the darkness beneath the world.

This is why many hunters entering dangerous forests perform rituals to calm themselves before traveling at night. Some sit silently beneath Jambu’s light until their breathing slows. Others whisper prayers before crossing into ancient territory.

Because according to old beliefs…

certain creatures can feel fear before they ever see you.

One hunter from the southern forests once wrote:

“The moment terror entered my chest…
the forest no longer felt empty.”

No one knows whether he truly encountered a Night Stalker.

But many believe he did.

Among the oldest beliefs surrounding the forests is the idea that the land itself possesses memory. Elders say the trees remember emotion the way rivers remember storms. Every fear, every scream, every act of grief leaves impressions behind that never fully disappear.

And the creatures dwelling within those forests are believed to sense those memories.

This is why some tribes warn travelers never to enter ancient forests while emotionally unstable. If you walk beneath the trees consumed by panic, despair, or rage, the forest is believed to remember your spirit.

And once remembered…

certain things beneath the earth may begin remembering you too.

The Night Stalkers are feared because they are believed to sense emotional instability the way sharks sense blood in water. Some elders claim fear creates disturbances within the spirit that become visible to Underrealm creatures.

Not visible to human eyes.

But visible to things beneath the world.

This belief becomes even more terrifying when combined with another ancient superstition:

That fear spreads.

In certain villages, people claim panic itself can attract Night Stalkers faster than noise ever could. Entire hunting groups have reportedly vanished after one person lost emotional control deep within forbidden territory.

Some survivors describe strange experiences before encounters.

Sudden silence.

Pressure in the chest.

The feeling of being watched long before seeing movement.

Others claim the darkness itself begins to feel heavier around them — as though fear somehow allows unseen things to move closer.

Whether these stories are true remains unknown.

But even warriors from Kumbo take such beliefs seriously.

Some military trainers intentionally force young warriors into frightening situations, not simply to harden them physically, but to teach emotional control. Many believe a panicked mind becomes dangerous not only to itself…

but to everyone nearby.

This philosophy is perhaps best captured by an old saying repeated across multiple kingdoms:

“The forest feels your fear before the creatures do.”

there are darker beliefs surrounding the Night Stalkers.

Some elders claim the creatures do not merely sense fear.

They feed upon it.

Not physically.

Spiritually.

According to forbidden stories, prolonged terror slowly weakens the connection between a person and Jambu’s light. The more consumed someone becomes by panic, hopelessness, or emotional collapse, the easier it becomes for certain Underrealm entities to influence them.

This is why courage is treated as sacred throughout much of the world.

Not because courage guarantees survival.

But because courage is believed to keep the spirit anchored to itself even when darkness closes in.

Whether the Night Stalkers truly hunt fear…

or whether fear simply causes people to destroy themselves…

remains one of the oldest debates in the world of Chaku’s Adventure.

But across forests, villages, and kingdoms, one warning continues to survive generation after generation:
